Redundancy Payments for Remploy Workers - Letter to Secretary of State

Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP

30th July 2012

Dear Secretary of State,

Redundancy Payments for Remploy Factory Workers:

You will be aware that I have a Remploy Factory in Merthyr Tydfil in my constituency where all are being made compulsorily redundant.

I would like to associate myself with the call and remarks set out by my fellow South Wales Valleys MP Rt Hon Peter Hain in a letter sent to you last week (copy enclosed), urging for proper and fair treatment for these individuals with regard to their severance packages.

Given your pervious unwelcomed expressed attitudes to worklessness and unemployment in Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding area, you will not be surprised at the concern and disgust at how these vulnerable individuals are being treated which is particularly strong.

The way individuals are being treated, as well as your overall plan for Remploy, should be adjusted and one important element in that, at least, are the severance arrangements. I hope you will, in negotiation with the unions and Remploy staff, address their grievances and adopt the course suggested by a former Secretary of State. An early intervention by you removing this grievance and uncertainty is urgently needed so these individuals affected and their families can properly plan their lives.

Yours sincerely

Dai Havard MP
